Narconon Drug Rehab Program Offers Multi-Faceted Process
Around the world, there are tens of thousands of drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs but among these, the Narconon drug recovery program stands out as unique. The Narconon program is holistic, long term, and drug-free, which simply means the following:
- The program addresses the whole person, the problems that led to substance abuse and recovery from the lingering damage done by drug abuse
- The treatment program is on average of 3-5 months long making it a long term drug rehab
- The Narconon program never uses replacement drugs or medications that would impede the full achievement of a drug-free life.
Each person on the Narconon drug rehab program goes through a multi-faceted process of recovery. There is a specific address to recovery of personal integrity, relief of guilt and depression, all through drug-free methods.
There is also an innovative detoxification phase that uses exercise, a low-heat sauna and an exact nutritional program to enable the body to flush out residual drug toxins. At the end of this phase, recovering addicts report that they can think more clearly, they feel more energetic and that their cravings are reduced or sometimes even gone entirely.
Once this is done, those participating in the program go on to the life skills portion of the Narconon program in which they learn how they can restore their own personal integrity and sense of worth, learn how to make drug-free decisions in challenging situations and develop a strong personal sense of values.
The complete intention of the Narconon program is the creation of a person who is free from cravings and who has the ability to face life without drug or alcohol abuse. Very few people in recovery (if any) can accomplish this improvement in a short-term program. And for those in outpatient programs close to home, the exposure to drug-using associates or locations where drugs were bought or used can make it very difficult to find lasting recovery. For many thousands of people over forty-five years of delivery, the long-term inpatient program offered by Narconon has been the answer they were looking for.
The Background of the Narconon Drug Rehab Program

William Benitez
The origins of the Narconon go back to the Arizona State Prison system in 1966. Inmate William Benitez was again incarcerated for the heroin addiction he could not shake. In despair, he wondered if he would ever find a way to stay clean and sober after leaving prison. By luck, he came across a slim volume in the prison library that would enable him to find a way out of the addiction trap. It was the book Fundamentals of Thought by L. Ron Hubbard.
With the use of the basics on life contained in this book and with the support of a continuing correspondence with the author, Mr. Benitez learned how to face life without the use of addictive substances. His next step was to help other incarcerated addicts recover from addiction the same way he had. It took six months to convince the prison authorities to let him run meetings in which the other addicted inmates could learn and practice the skills provided by Mr. Hubbard skills that would enable them to confront their problems head on and solve them rather than hiding behind drug abuse. In February 1966, he received that approval and began to instruct a group of addicts who, like him, desperately wanted to leave addiction behind forever.
With his successes helping other inmates recover from addiction and his sentence complete, Mr. Benitez traveled to Los Angeles to found the first Narconon organization. Soon, people began to arrive from all over Southern California to recover from their problems with drugs or alcohol.
Forty-Five Years Later, Narconon is an International Organization
One organization in Los Angeles spread to several across the United States and then to many in other parts of the world. Drug education groups basing their presentations on the Narconon drug recovery technology began to spring up in more cities. Now there are 120 drug rehabilitation and education centers in cities on six continents. They’re in cities as diverse as Montreal and Vienna, Moscow and Johannesburg, Honolulu and Sao Paulo.
Over time, enhancements were adopted from new information on drug recovery released by Mr. Hubbard. The Narconon program as it stands now is a long-term recovery program that offers relief from guilt, cravings and depression, provides a thorough detoxification process and boosts life skills and moral certainty. Forty-five years of success provides proof of the workability of the Narconon program in helping good people return to productive, enjoyable lives.
