Minnesota Drug & Alcohol Rehab Centers

Minnesota’s Rehab Centers Help Combat Trafficking and Abuse of Drugs and Alcohol Throughout the State

Minnesota Drug Rehab & Alcohol Rehab CentersWith approximately 53% of Minnesota’s population living in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, it is no wonder that the majority of substance abuse, addiction, and dependency problems occur in that 7-county region of the state. It is also where you will find the major portion of Minnesota drug rehab facilities. Minnesota’s infrastructure relies a great deal on their transportation networks that criss-cross the state as well, which explains how illegal substances are trafficked into and throughout the state.

There are nearly 130,000 miles of interstate highways including I-35, 90, and 94, urban streets, and rural roads in Minnesota as well. Minneapolis-St. Paul is also the 3rd largest trucking center in the US. Additionally, the rail system accommodates 4 major carriers and 20 smaller ones. All of this adds up to one critical fact – access is extremely easy for the DTO’s (Drug Trafficking Organizations) who want to distribute illegal substances into and throughout the state.

Another factor is that the 596-mile long Minnesota/Canada international border is sparsely populated and along with Lake Superior, there are 13 ports of entry that these DTO’s can use to their advantage as well. There is also the inland Mississippi River System which has 231 navigable waterway miles which makes an excellent corridor for substance trafficking along with all the others. It is easy to see why the city of Minneapolis-St. Paul has the drug problems that it does today as well as many other of the urban areas in the state.

The following statistics reflect information that has been taken from the many addiction treatment and recovery centers throughout Minnesota:

  • 71% of all alcoholics are male while 72.3% of those individuals who are addicted to alcohol and a primary drug are males
  • 44% of all alcoholics are between the ages of 36 and 45, while over 31% of all substance users between the ages of 31 and 40 drink alcohol and use a primary drug with their alcoholic beverage
  • 44.5% of all cocaine users are between the ages of 31 and 40
  • nearly 33% of al heroin users are between the ages of 31 and 40
  • nearly 60% of all marijuana users are between the ages of 12 and 20
  • 42% of all meth users are between the ages of 18 and 25
  • drug arrests in the state of Minnesota dipped in 2003 but have been gradually on the increase since that point in time
  • meth lab seizures peaked in 2003 but have been steadily declining since then

In the state of Minnesota, the transportation and distribution of illegal substances is primarily controlled by Mexican traffickers as far as black-tar heroin, cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine are concerned. The following is information that pertains to the five primary drug threats according to the DEA:

  • Cocaine – the primary sources of the cocaine that is being distributed in Minnesota is the state of California as well as the cities of Chicago and Detroit. Again, the majority of the supply is being controlled by Mexican DTO’s.
  • Heroin – the distribution, sales, and use of heroin in Minnesota has not been considered as significant problems, but recent reports and statistics indicate that the use of the drug is increasing, especially in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. African-American and Hispanic gangs are primarily responsible for the distribution of heroin.
  • Marijuana – the most readily available and commonly used substance in Minnesota is still marijuana according to the DEA and numerous public health officials. The majority of the marijuana that enters Minnesota comes from Mexico while the Hispanic street gangs distribute the majority of the drugs throughout the state.
  • Methamphetamine – large quantities of meth entering the state are being produced in California by several Mexican DTO’s and then distributed throughout Minnesota. It is also being manufactured locally in small, rural laboratories.

Getting the professional help you need

Substance abuse, addiction, and dependency are huge problems in society today with about 40 million individuals in the US being addicted to either alcohol or drugs. In the state of Minnesota, the situation is no different in that the primary urban centers are witnessing an increasing problem with several different addictive substances. As the availability of these substances increases, so does the number of admissions into the different Minnesota drug rehab facilities.

The harsh reality concerning those 40 million individuals discussed in the above paragraph is that 40% to 50% of them need immediate help for their abuse, addiction, or dependency issues. Sadly, only 10% of the total number will actually get the help they need. Even more tragic is the fact that some of those cases will turn fatal and many of those deaths will result from suicide. Once the addicted individual admits they do have a problem with a substance, finding the best addiction treatment and recovery center is the next step.

If you are or a loved one are in a position where it is time to get professional help from a Minnesota drug rehab facility, you will most likely be faced with a few decisions. However, the primary one is to determine what type of rehab program will address your needs effectively so that you can overcome your addiction problems and start recovering. You may find yourself deciding between an out-patient rehab program and an in-patient, residential one.
