Hotbed of American Culture, Kentucky Aims to Keep Its Citizens from the Darker Side of Life

Kentucky is a beautiful state, known for the horses bred there. It’s also home to nearly 4.4 million people, rolling grasslands, beautiful waterfalls, awe-inspiring caves and caverns, and the Cumberland Gap, which played a vital role in U.S. western expansion into Kentucky and Tennessee. Louisville, home of Churchill Downs where the Kentucky Derby runs each year, is the largest city in Kentucky. Other major cities include Lexington, Bowling Green, and Frankfort, which is the state capital.

At first glance, Kentucky is not a hotbed of illicit drug use. It’s a state where tradition, family, and faith carry a great deal of meaning to the people. However, drug use, particularly non-medical use of prescription drugs, is becoming a major issue throughout the state. Another area of concern, according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, is past month use of an illicit drug other than marijuana (ages 12-17).

If you or someone you love is struggling to overcome addiction or dependency on marijuana or prescription drugs, there is help available. DrugRehab.org is a referral service dedicated to connecting people who need help to overcome addiction with the right Kentucky drug rehab facilities and treatments to meet your needs. We understand that finding the right facility and situation is critical to successful treatment and are here to help.

Kentucky Drug and Alcohol Truths

Sometimes, the truth hurts. In the state of Kentucky, 786 people died directly from illicit drug use in 2009. That accounted for 18.2 people for every 100,000, alarmingly above the national drug-induced death rate of 12.8 per 100,000. From 2004 to 2008, three counties in Kentucky (Bell, Clinton, and Martin) were among the top ten in the nation for drug poisoning deaths. News reports from 2011 have drug-related deaths soaring to more than 1,000 deaths per year in Kentucky.

One of every three adults in Kentucky claims to have friends or family members who misuse or abuse prescription drugs, and three Kentuckians die each day from drug overdoses.

Between 2008 and 2011, meth lab seizures in Kentucky rose by nearly 300 percent from 441 to 1,748.

The Current State of Crime In Kentucky

Not all drug and alcohol related crimes are violent in nature. In 2010, Governor Steve Beshear signed a law into effect that addresses the growing problem in Kentucky associated with people driving under the influence of illegal and prescription drugs, for which the driver lacked a prescription.

“The law establishes a per se DUI offense for driving with a detectable level of an illegal substance or a controlled substance for which the person does not have a valid prescription. The drugs covered by the legislation include those that Kentucky’s state crime lab identified as appearing in 80 percent of DUI drug cases (e.g., oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, methamphetamine, and cocaine).”

In the state of Kentucky, 8.9 percent of people over the age of 16 drove under the influence of alcohol in the past year, compared to a national average of 13.2 percent.

The number of drivers over the age of 16 who drove under the influence of illicit drugs within the past year, however, was 3.8 percent.

Drug Rehab Treatment Options in Kentucky

Kentucky is a state where people are always willing to lend a helping hand. The same holds true when it comes to getting treatment for addiction to prescription drugs in Kentucky. There are many facilities available and willing to help.

Residential drug rehab centers, for instance, are growing in popularity because they lack the clinical feel many traditional treatment centers have. Treatment is conducted in home-like environments where many creature comforts are available to residents and the atmosphere is far less intimidating to them. In these facilities, participants are able to focus their attention on recovery, which they’d be unable to do if utilizing outpatient treatment and facing all the stress and temptation of being at home when the sessions end.

Of course, you can’t really talk about the “Bluegrass State” without discussing the benefits of equine therapy for addiction in Kentucky. If there’s one thing Kentucky has, it’s horses. Equine therapy is a type of therapy that involves teaching participants to care for another animal and use the acts of caring for the animal to fill the void in their lives that drugs filled in the past. It’s the act of replacing something negative with something that’s positive and beneficial to the person and the horse. This type of treatment has been highly effective for methamphetamine addiction treatment, prescription drugs addiction treatment, and dependencies to marijuana.
