Sunny Florida, Overshadowed by Its Prevalent Drug and Alcohol Abuse
The beautiful, sunny state of Florida has much to offer the 19.3 million people who call it home. That’s not even counting the “snowbirds” who flock to Florida’s sunny shores when the winter winds begins blowing up north or the countless families traveling from all over the world to visit with Mickey.
From the wide sandy beaches of Daytona Beach to happy theme parks in Orlando to the everglades and clubs of Miami, Florida has a little something to offer everyone. The state of Florida is also one giant coastline.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration states that Florida has 8,436 miles of coast. While it’s a drop in the bucket compared to Alaska, it’s an impressive challenge for people tasked with keeping drugs from coming into the country by sea. Then there are countless highways, Interstates, and turnpikes in Florida that make transporting drugs from the coastline to interior locations surprisingly, yet unfortunately, simple.
Despite the ease of access and wide availability of drugs throughout Florida, there are many resources available to help anyone struggling with addiction get the help needed to overcome it. DrugRehab.org is here to help connect those who are addicted to drugs and the families that love them get the help they need today.
Florida Drug Facts You Should Know
Florida is above the national average for drug-induced deaths with drugs being the direct cause of death in 2,936 instances at a rate of 16.1 per 100,000 people. The national average is only 12.7 per 100,000.
Prescription drug abuse is becoming a huge problem throughout the state of Florida. According to a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, “During 2003–2009, 85.9% of drug overdose deaths were unintentional, 11.1% were suicides, 2.6% were of undetermined intent, and 0.4% were homicides or pending. Prescription medications were implicated in 76.1% of all drug overdose deaths, and illicit drugs were implicated in 33.9% of deaths; in 10.0% of deaths, both prescription and illicit drugs were found in lethal concentrations.”
In addition, between 2007 and 2009, the number of Florida meth lab seizures increased 148 percent. They went from 127 in 2007 to 318 in 2009. In 2012, meth lab incidence numbers were down, slightly, to 284.
The Relationship of Drugs and Crime in Florida
The rate of violent crime in Florida for 2006, according to the United States Census Bureau, is 712 per 100,000 population, ranking it as fourth leading in the nation for crime.
Drug offenders in the state of Florida spend 166 percent more time in jail for convictions in 2009 than they did for the same non-violent offenses in 1990, according to a recent study conducted by The PEW Charitable Trusts.
Florida Substance Abuse Treatment Programs and Options
While admitting that there is a problem is the first step, getting help for that problem is the logical next step. Unfortunately, it’s one many people throughout Florida struggle with.
Florida is home to many older adults, and the truth of the matter is alcohol and drug addiction doesn’t play favorites. Many seniors take prescription drugs, including painkillers, as advised by their physicians. However, for some seniors, a tolerance for a medication builds up, and the older person becomes dependent on the drug. This is where seniors/older adults drug rehab in Florida can help.
Alternative treatment for drugs and alcohol addiction in Florida are also widely available. Alternative programs are generally conducted in home-like environments. They can provide a personal approach to treating the addiction. Those participating in such programs have the opportunity to attend classes, read educational materials, and participate in therapy sessions (group and individual) as part of the treatment process. They also invest a good deal of time teaching coping mechanisms, relapse prevention methods, and other life skills to aid in the recovery process.
