Dr. Humphreys researches interventions for substance abuse and psychiatric disorders. He focuses particularly on evaluating the outcomes of professionally-administered treatments and peer-operated self-help groups (e.g., Alcoholics Anonymous), developing health services research-related applications for innovative qualitative and quantitative research techniques, and analyzing national mental health policy.

His areas of research interest include federal mental health and drug policies; veterans’ health care; consumer-intensive health management programs; addictive disorders; differences between treatment research subjects and real-world patients.

In addition to working in scientific research, he has worked as a scientist for the Veterans Health Administration and served as a Senior Policy Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
